Wood Wedding Bands for Men: Types, Durability & Care

Everything about wood wedding bands for men: solid wood vs tungsten rings with wood inlays, the most popular woods, how durable they are, and how to keep a wooden ring...

Not every man wants a wedding band that looks like it came from a jewelry counter. For men who feel most at home outdoors, who work with their hands, or who simply like natural materials, a wood wedding band feels warmer and more personal than gold or plain steel. Every piece of wood has its own grain, so no two rings look exactly alike.

The common worry is durability. Can wood really last a lifetime on your hand? The answer depends on how the ring is built, and that's what this guide is about.

Solid wood rings vs wood-inlay rings

There are two very different kinds of wooden ring:

  • Solid wood (bentwood) rings are made entirely from wood. They're light and beautiful, but wood can swell, crack or wear with water, sweat and knocks. They need careful handling and often eventually need replacing.
  • Wood-inlay rings set a channel of wood into a hard metal band. The metal carries the strength; the wood carries the look. This is the most practical choice for a ring you'll wear every day.

All of our wood rings are built on the second principle, most of them on a tungsten band. Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials used in jewelry, so the band itself resists scratches and holds its shape.

Wood inlay or wood inner band?

Within metal-and-wood rings there are two designs:

  • Wood on the outside: a stripe or channel of wood set into the outer surface. Very visible and the classic look, as on Romulus' Legacy with its whiskey barrel oak, or Achilles with Koa wood and turquoise.
  • Wood on the inside: a wooden sleeve lining the inside of the band, like Phoenix's Rebirth with its maroon Box Elder burl, or Drift, which hides a genuine wood inner band under flat black tungsten. The outside stays sleek, and the wood is your private detail.

The most popular woods for wedding bands

Whiskey barrel oak

Reclaimed from the barrels used to age whiskey, with a deep, warm brown tone. It's one of the most popular choices for a rugged wedding band. See Arawn, which pairs brushed black tungsten with charred whiskey barrel oak, and Diana on a silver band.

Koa wood

A Hawaiian hardwood with a golden-brown, often wavy grain. It pairs especially well with rose gold or silver tungsten. See Tyr, Astraeus and Asgard.

Box Elder burl

Burl wood comes from knotted growths on the tree, which produce a swirling, almost marbled grain. Dyed in rich colors, it makes a striking inner band, as on Cronus and Dionysus.

A note on "wood grain" Damascus

You'll also see rings described as wood grain Damascus steel, like Hephaestus. These contain no wood at all: the pattern is created by layering and folding steel. They give a woodgrain look with the full strength of metal. See all Damascus rings.

Wood combined with other natural inlays

Wood often sits alongside other natural materials. Popular pairings include wood with deer antler, as on Summit and Commander; and wood with a genuine guitar string, as on Harmonia. Browse all wood rings and antler rings.

How durable is a wood wedding band?

A wood-inlay ring on a tungsten band is far more durable than a solid wood ring, because the hard metal takes the knocks and the wood sits recessed in a channel. Still, the wood itself is a natural material and is softer than the band around it, so treat it with a little care:

  • Take the ring off for heavy lifting, contact sports and long swims.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
  • Store it separately so harder pieces don't scratch it.

How to care for a wooden wedding ring

Clean your ring with warm water and mild soap, then dry it right away with a soft cloth. Don't leave it soaking. That's all most wood-inlay rings need to keep their color and grain.

Sizing and engraving

Tungsten can't be cut and resized like gold, so check our sizing guide before ordering. If the ring doesn't fit, we exchange it for a different size within 60 days of delivery, and every ring ships with a free size adjuster. On engraveable rings you can add up to 60 characters inside the band.

Wood wedding bands: FAQ

Q: Can you wear a wood ring every day?
A: A wood-inlay ring on a tungsten band is made for daily wear. Just take it off for heavy work, contact sports and swimming.

Q: Can I shower with a wood wedding band?
A: Brief contact with water is fine for a wood-inlay ring, but it's best to take it off for long showers, baths and swimming, and to dry it afterwards.

Q: Are wood rings good for wedding bands?
A: Yes, especially for men who want a natural, one-of-a-kind look. Choose a wood inlay set in a hard metal band rather than a solid wood ring for something that lasts.

Q: Does a wood inlay ring need special maintenance?
A: No special products are needed. Warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth are enough.
